Last night was not a good night. Jason woke up at 3 am because he is still having really sharp calf pain in his left leg. He also had some indigestion, so I suggested we sit up and watch some late night TV until he felt better. I turn on the TV and what do I see...Obama picked Joe Biden for VP...grrrr! This did not make our night go any better. Oh well, if I know the Clintons, they will not give up and Hillary will run again in the future.
Jason was pretty worn out this morning because of his devastation over Hillary (just kidding), his lack of sleep. So Marjorie and I left him home to nap while we journeyed to Wal-mart to get some much needed supplies for the house. We bought Jason a scale and he is now back to his normal weight. He still looks like he has a bit of water weight so we think he might have lost a bit of muscle over the past 2 weeks.
So Jason is overall feeling pretty ok except for this intense calf pain. I have tried everything I can think of to lessen the pain and nothing helps. His doctor prescribed two 5 mg pills of oxycodone every 6 hours, you can't get a much stronger pain medicine without going to morphine. He said the oxycodone doesn't even touch the pain. He isn't allowed to take any aspirin, NSAID, or acetominophen. I tried rubbing extra strength arthritis cream on his calf. Didn't work. I tried Tiger Balm. Didn't work. I got him a heat pad and we tried ice packs and neither helped. We tried short walks and gentle stretches...no results. The pain seems to keep getting worse. He can barely put pressure on it and has to hobble along. I even took him to an acupuncturist this afternoon and that didn't help at all.
We are going to call his doctor on Monday. We already went to the emergency room and they ruled out a blood clot. So we have no idea what is causing this or how to make it better. If anyone has any ideas that I haven't thought of, I would love suggestions. He describes it has severe muscle pain in the back of his calf.
Tonight we are all taking it easy. We ordered a pizza and watched the last episode of Eureka, Season 2. It is a great show, quirky and humorous sci-fi. I recommend getting the DVD on Netflix. I hope everyone is doing well and we are missing you and San Diego. Especially Pita and the weather!
My dad made it safely back to Temecula and is now preparing to embark on a trip to Catalina island for some R&R after his road trip.

Joe was home for a day and left for Catalina this evening. He is indulging his wanderlust at the end of summer.
I don't have a cure for the calf pain. When I got muscle cramps from all day aerobic clinics I wore tights or pantyhose to bed. That kept the muscles warmer so they didn't cramp up. Maybe it's worth a try! If Jason tries it, I want a picture.
Yikes... the only thing I can think of is a) B vitamins for circulation; b) purchase a pair of compression socks which improve circulation but gnarly with the heat; c) vitamin D which helps absorb calcium that leaches during excercise from bones.. not sure what happens with heavy meds so maybe some vitamin D will help. Is it just one leg???
Ask for Dilaudid! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydromorphone
Try rubbing Jason's leg - may help.
J - drove to Lake Erie & Kelly's Island this week. On the way up, saw lots of CORN & cemeteries - your favorite thing in OH. Island had preserved glacier groves in the rocks - was neat to see. Sorry J you lost all your money on Clinton - maybe in 4 yrs.
Love ya'll Team Jensen. Take Care
Leg pain could be related to the cancer itself. You should definitely ask the doctor about it. This guess is based on someone I know who was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer last year. She had a severe pain in her arm for several weeks which led her to being diagnosed with the cancer elsewhere in her body. Good luck.
Sorry about your disappointment over Hillary not being on the ticket, Debby. However, this WILL be an INTERESTING week in Denver.
The first thing I thought of when I read your post was a vitamin deficiency. But what do I know? My brain has been on a gradual decline due to too may episodes of Sesame Street.
I am glad that you are contacting your doctor. He should have a better answer for you.
Debbie and Marjorie, it sounds like you are doing an exceptional job caring for Jason. He is so blessed to have you both there!
P.S. I cannot believe Pita is still with us. She sure was a rascal and I am sure nothing has changed!
Well I guess Joe is not the best he could have done, his numbers actually went down a little bit...but let's hope for the best.
An aggravated siatic nerve can give you the type pain you describe. I had some pretty bad pain and a disturbing "ripple" sensation on my calf. OTC naproxen slowly did the trick. Ask your doctor.
